The
Future of Drug Testing in Schools
What do the cases cited above have to
say about the future of drug testing
in American schools? The trend would
appear to be toward a broader mandate
for such programs. But critics of drug
testing raise many of the same
objections to school programs that
they do for workplace programs. In
arguing against drug testing in higher
education, one writer contends,
"Mandatory drug testing without proven
cause is profoundly disrespectful. It
is a bad lesson for universities to
teach and wretched training for
citizens.
But
one new issue arises when talking
about drug testing in schools. Whether
one likes it or not, students do not
necessarily have all the same rights
and freedoms that adults have. For
example, the most common type of "drug
testing" in schools is locker
searches. Teachers and principals
routinely open their lockers without
their permission and often without
their knowledge.
